A bill on the table that would allow Rhode Island voters to decide whether a new casino can be built in the town of Tiverton is moving through legislature.
According to a report from the Associated Press, Rhode Island’s House of Representatives voted 96-4 Wednesday in favor of the referendum. The bill was still making progress in the Senate as of Thursday.
The property would come from Twin River Management Group, which operators the Newport Grand slots parlor. The new Las Vegas-style casino would replace Newport Grand, the report said. Voters in Newport rejected a proposed $40 million expansion of that facility in 2012.
The casino operator also owns Twin River Casino in Lincoln, which opened a 16-table poker room just this past December. Twin River received the OK to add house-banked table games a few years ago.
A successful statewide referendum would then put the issue up to Tiverton voters.
Rhode Island’s gambling industry yields the state more than $350 million annually in tax revenue, but some see that as under threat by gambling expansion in Massachusetts.
The Tiverton casino would have 85,000 square feet of gaming and hotel space.
