It's the character of the sport that as things progress towards the business end of the tournament, its most fun stage, the corridors become emptied of the bustle that when marked the beginning of the primary event. Players busted just yesterday are probably already home, thousands of miles clear of this place that serves because the centre of the poker world.
After a late finish yesterday the sector Series of Poker Main Event field was slimmed to simply 79 players, each player staggering out of the Amazon Room and to a bed within reach for whatever rest they may manage before resuming this afternoon. At stake a spot within the penultimate day of the largest game in town.
Mark Newhouse is on an improbable run. He led entering today with 7.4 million chips, remarkably that quantity being a shade greater than the dimensions of stack he took to the November Nine late last year. It might be an implausible achievement if he were to make back to back November Nines, something that's never been done before.
As play began though it was Kyle Keranen who was moving up the chip counts, with greater than 8 million chips. As we reported yesterday Martin Jacobson remains within the field, as does Yorane Kerignard and Vitaly Lunkin. They'll head the Europeans tilting at a return trip to November.
In the meantime, as they play on on the Rio, a special event may be happening downtown this afternoon, because the poker community unites to pay tribute to the late Chad Brown. We'll be reporting on events there at the PokerStars Blog.
