This week, the web Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the non-profit, independent organization in command of assigning domains and IP addresses, gave approval to an offer to create a brand new suffix specifically for pornographic sites. The designation of .xxx as a grouping for adult-oriented and sexual sites may portend a future domain for online gambling sites.
The decision to provide porn sites an exclusive domain may bring more customers on to the product they would like. Communities and regulators may also, in turn, find sites using the .xxx easier to censor and isolate.
The move by ICANN brought mixed reactions from sources on each side of the pornography issue. While some porn distributors liked the concept, others say putting pornography aside from the remainder of society continues a stigmatization of the industry and allows censors to find a very simple target.
Strangely enough, religious groups also denounced the dot.x plan, saying it might give porn more legitimacy and increase the quantity of pornography at the Internet.
Still, Internet casino operators are eyeing the theory of a specialized domain. Online gambling sites could become transparent and cooperative with regulatory law by occupying a website that clearly indicates the gaming connection.
If regulation is passed within the US, online gambling sites could gain advantage by establishing a website that tells both the patron and regulators the positioning is a gambling venue. So long as mirrored sites exist on other domains to forestall censorship, online casino companies could conduct business at .gam, giving them the similar Internet impact as governments and schools using .gov and .edu.
