Malta to become newest festival at the European Poker Tour

Have you ever noticed that a lot of live event reports at the PokerStars Blog feature the expression "at the shores of the Mediterranean"?

It happened again this week in the course of the France Poker Series in Cannes, which dropped at mind EPT Sanremo and the EPT Grand Final in Monaco (we sometimes mix within the expression "shores of the Riviera" to maintain things fresh), and naturally EPT Barcelona.

But we cannot really help it. And guess what? Another event now qualifies. A BRAND SPANKING NEW stop not only at the shores of the Mediterranean but slap bang in the course of it, now added to the season 11 schedule - EPT Malta.

Today PokerStars proudly announced this new addition to the Tour and the primary event of its kind at the beautiful Mediterranean island, taking place March 18-28.

Malta is already home to a big poker community, many exiles having chosen Malta for plenty of reasons, not least because English is spoken, and as the climate is likely one of the most tranquil in all of Europe. It is going to prove a really perfect draw for players from across the world.

The EPT Malta festival will happen within the seaside resort of St Julians', and can feature greater than 40 tournaments played within the popular Portomaso Casino. It is a venue that has previously hosted Italian Poker Tour events in addition to PokerStars sponsored Swedish and Finnish Championships. Now will probably be stepping up.

The highlight of the 11 days festival would be the €5,300 Main Event, in addition to a €1,100 IPT Main Event. EPT-run cash games can also be offered in addition to the now standard array of side events in all conceivable disciplines.

"After discussions with players and fellow colleagues, we decided that it was time so as to add a fresh and exciting stop to the EPT schedule," said Edgar Stuchly, EPT President. "Malta is a brilliant destination for an EPT and we think strong participation numbers. With excellent connections to all major European cities, a warm Mediterranean climate, delicious local cuisine and plenty of great tourist activities, Malta is the very best place for players to come back with their family and friends next spring."

Michael Holmberg, PokerStars General Manager in Malta, added his endorsement:

"Malta is where PokerStars.eu is based, so we're more than happy to bring the EPT home to what's the easiest combination of a 24/7 poker offering in addition to the danger to flee the grind and discover everything that Malta has to provide".

Eros Ganzina, General Manager of Portomaso Casino, said: "WE'RE delighted and proud to announce our new collaboration with PokerStars and the EPT. Malta is renowned as an overly popular poker destination and within the last five years Portomaso Casino has proved to be greater than in a position to hosting large scale events. The EPT is clearly a landmark for us and we're waiting for hosting this sort of prestigious tournament. We're positive that poker players will benefit from the new EPT destination."

In addition to the action at the tables, there'll be gripping action clear of it. The 14th edition of the GPI European Poker Awards may be staged on March 25, switching from Deauville where last year's ceremony took place, won by Ole Schemion of Germany who was crowned European Player of the Year.

EPT Malta satellites will run daily on PokerStars from as low as €1.10 or 50 FPPs so that you can book your Spring Break at poker's newest destination. For more information, visit the EPT website

And so we head to the shores of the Mediterranean yet again. We would say it so much but then, what's to not like about that?
