ANZPT Canberra Day 2: Levels 13 & 14 (blinds 1,500-3,000, ante 300)

8:45pm: Ten-minute break

8:25pm: Edwards survives four barrels from Graham

Jarred Graham were running over his table but he just hit a roadblock within the type of Luke Edwards. It started with Graham min-raising to 6,000 and Edwards calling at the button. Brett Chalhoub came along within the big ignorant of see a flop of [6c][as][9c].

Action checked to Graham who bet 13,500. Edwards made the decision as Chalhoub got out of ways. At the [qh] turn, Graham bet again for 24,400 and Edwards made the decision as a large pot was brewing.

The river fell the [td] and Graham released another barrel worth a hefty 36,200. Edwards shrugged and declared a decision as Graham tabled [ah][9s] for 2 pair, but he'd been rivered as Edwards showed [ac][tc]. Graham slips to 150,000 with Edwards pushing 200,000.

8:05pm: Gorr and Vandersluis double; Kerr busto

The short stacks aren't going easily here as now we have two more double ups to report.

Andrew Watson's wealth didn't last long as he ran his ace-king into the [as][ah] of Aussie Millions champion David Gorr. The board fell [tc][qd][4h][3s][8d] to offer Gorr a large double as much as 145,000. Watson is back off to 135,000.

Meanwhile overnight chip leader Scott Kerr is at the ropes after being crippled in unfortunate fashion against Roy Vandersluis. The chips were in preflop with Kerr's [ah][ks] appearing set for a chop when Vandersluis opened the similar hand - [ac][kc]. That is, until the board ran out [4s][5c][jd][8c][3c] to provide Vandersluis a flush to double to 77,000.

Kerr was crippled to only 8,000 chips which he lost moments later as our day one chip leader was eliminated.

8:00pm: A FEW doubles

Roy Vandersluis has found a much-needed double up when he open shoved for 15,700 with [as][ts] and John Maklouf made the decision with [qc][qd]. Vandersluis got some help when the board ran out [jd][3c][2c][ad][jc] to spike his ace and double to 37,000. Maklouf is right down to 40,000.

On a close-by table James Broom and Andrew Watson went to war preflop in a cutoff versus small blind battle. Broom went with [ah][js] but Watson held a dominant [ac][ks] which hung on the [7d][ad][7h][3c][kc] board. Broom is backtrack to 110,000 with Watson now looking strong on 203,000.

7:55pm: Morooka coolers the Toothpick

A cooler of a hand has seen the short-stacked Te Wiremu Mcgarvey run into two monster hands as Takahiro Morooka doubled up through Toothpick Tony.

Morooka opened with a raise which Mcgarvey flat called, before Toothpick installed the three-bet. Morooka flat-called as Mcgarvey called all in for his last chips.

The flop landed [8c][ts][2h] and Toothpick bet 14,000 into the side pot. However Morooka wasn't going anywhere as he moved all in for 48,700. Toothpick called it off with [kh][kc] but Morooka held the rockets along with his [as][ac]. Meanwhile things weren't looking good for Mcgarvey together with his pocket nines.

The turn was the [8d] and river the [7h] to peer Mcgarvey eliminated and Morooka greater than doubling as much as 147,000. Toothpick slips to 80,000.

7:45pm: Level up, blinds 1,500-3,000, ante 300

7:40pm: Double for Maklouf

Te Wiremu Mcgarvey opened with a raise to 5,000 before John Maklouf moved all in for a complete of 31,700. Mcgarvey made the decision with [as][jc] to be racing with Maklouf's [7c][7h].

The board fell [qc][qd][2h][6c][9s] to depart Maklouf's pair in front for a double as much as 65,000. Mcgarvey slips to 25,000.

7:30pm: Holtzapffel sets up Boxell

Leo Boxell's mighty run within the ANZPT Canberra Main Event has come to an end. The fan favourite made the decision when Lee Holtzapffel pushed all in on a flop of [6h][jh][7h]. Boxell opened [js][ts] for prime pair but Holtzapffel had flopped a collection together with his [7s][7d].

The turn was the [as] and the river [qc] to double up Holtzapffel to around 70,000 chips. Boxell was left with only a few hundred in chips which disappeared moments later as Boxell hit the rail.

lee holtzapffel anzpt canberra.jpg

Lee Holtzapffel is pretty happy to double up through Leo Boxell

7:25pm: Bain flushes Davey

Tristan Bain has jumped up with the tournament chip leaders in a tremendous clash with Peter Davey. The chips were in at the turn with the board reading [jh][ah][qs][7h]. Davey pushed with [9h][6h] but Bain insta-called with [qh][4h].

The river was the [9d] and after a countdown of chips, Bain just had him covered to eliminate Davey and jump Bain as much as nearly 200,000 chips.

7:15pm: Nice call by Broom

We only saw the action at the river, but obviously Leo Boxell's story wasn't quite convincing enough as James Broom made a horny heroic call. The board read [td][7d][qh][3d][2h] and Boxell tossed out 18,000 into the middle, but Broom made the call.

Boxell opened [9s][8s] for a missed straight draw as Broom's light call with [jc][7c] was a beauty. Broom is back as much as 200,000 with Boxell back off to 50,000.

7:05pm: Moussa takes out a shorty

We've lost our first player post-dinner as George Moussa has sorted probably the most short stacks of the sector. Moussa made the decision when his opponent moved all in for 8,700. Moussa showed [kh][tc] and was in dominant shape against [qs][ts].

The short-stacked player had already stood from his chair and placed on his jacket in preparation of the bad news, which indeed arrived at the [ac][3h][jc][jd][qh] board. Moussa makes a straight to transport as much as 160,000.

7:00pm: Boxell pulls the stop and go

"Not a nasty recovery from 12,000," chuckled Leo Boxell after raking in another pot. From the small blind, he'd called the raise from Lee Holtzapffel to 9,300 from under the gun. They saw a [jc][9h][8c] flop and Boxell immediately moved all in to place Holtzapffel to a choice for his tournament life.

Holtzapffel thought for a very long time before folding as Boxell gets himself back to 80,000.

6:45pm: Play resumes

The 32 players have returned from dinner with just a hunger for more chips! Jarred Graham is out in front with Khiem Nguyen, Mario Ljubicic and James Broom the following best.

We'll be continuing this evening until we reach the cash for our final fifteen players.

Macau Drives Gambling World as Wynn Casinos Report Profit

Macau's reborn gambling explosion has casino operators comparable to Wynn rejoicing, at the same time as Las Vegas recovers more tentatively.

Play Now at Slots Oasis! Macau remains to be the magic fix-all for the issues and policy mistakes of casino operators as strong performance within the Asian gambling enclave brought an extraordinary profit to Wynn Resorts quarterly reports. Wynn detailed profit increases of 82 percent and revenue rising 32 percent at its Macau casinos, making the corporate profitable for under the second one quarter over the past six.

Las Vegas gambling also made a comeback, albeit a slower one, as Wynn revenue rose by over 9 percent, and the Wynn casinos' operating loss narrowed. But Macau is the dominant wind behind the Wynn gaming ship these days, to the purpose that Steve Wynn has begun speculating on moving his headquarters to Macau.

Corporate excess in building lavish resorts financed by enormous loans, at the side of a company bottom-line mentality that cost Las Vegas its rep because the city of comps, had exacerbated the results of the recession on destination gambling palaces. But Macau seems to forgive all, or even though gaming operators blindly follow the similar path from which they barely escaped, the casino gambling frenzy in Asia is bringing huge profits.

Wynn reported first quarter profits of $27 million, up from last year's lack of $33.8 million. That suggests shareholders earned 22 cents a share, versus losing 30 cents a share in 2009.

Overall casino revenue rose 28 percent, and in Las Vegas 19 percent. However, Vegas occupancy rates stayed below 90 percent, and hotel revenue was down almost 9 percent.

Playboy Pushes Poker Player Krupa for Dancing Award

Sometime-aspiring poker player Joanna Krupa aims to be the "Dancing with the celebrities" champion, with somewhat help from Playboy.

The "Dancing with the celebs" competition goes beyond an appreciation of the merits to out-and-out lobbying, therefore by Playboy for erstwhile poker player Joanna Krupa. The magazine is e-mailing consumers, asking that they support the model-turned-card-player-turned-dancer by voting for her within the competition.

Krupa is one of many poker celebrities whose modeling has resulted in a wierd relationship with the sport. Her attractiveness and modeling portfolio gave her a chance as an on-air personality for poker television, and she or he used the exposure to publicize herself as a nascent student of poker.

While Krupa became the spokesmodel for Titan Poker, she also alluded to her own playing, receiving a name with no need perhaps done her time within the trenches. Clearly, an attraction to cards wouldn't slow Krupa's drive to fame, as she posed for Playboy and Sports Illustrated.

Krupa is within the current competition of "Dancing," competing against a gaggle of barely-known celebs in conjunction with oddball inclusions like Tom DeLay, the previous House Majority Leader, and ex-Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin. Krupa already was near the highest of a crowded field, however the push by Playboy to gather votes even from those not watching the show could lead her to the top.

Krupa doesn't even bother to her list what passes for her poker resume on her "Dancing" page, preferring to list her modeling accomplishments. But poker players will still remember her as some of the beauties of the game, if not one among poker's masters.

LAPT7 Peru: Poker teaches (again) we're only partly on top of things

Life is filled with happenstance, endlessly influenced by accident meetings, unforeseen events, and other ephemera impossible to foretell. We make our choices, often convincing ourselves we alone direct our fates. But such confidence is difficult to keep up under close scrutiny, as such a lot of what affects us is beyond our control.

Poker tournaments dramatically illustrate this truth over and again. The primary level today isn't over, and already seven players have fallen -- Pedro Idrovo (45th), Jose Rosenkrantz (44th), Oscar Maldonado (43rd), Jose Severino (42nd), Raul Huayana (41st), Jose Antonio Serrate (40th), and Edgar Troche (39th).

It could have been more. For instance, Guilerme Moura could easily was one of the vital knockouts, if not for another's slip.

A hand had just begun, then a misdeal was declared. Having been dealt pocket tens, Moura expressed his dispeasure with enough emphasis to earn a temporary respite from play within the type of a penalty. "Cinco manos," was the verdict.

As he stood to stroll away, another player revealed he'd been dealt pocket kings within the hand. The misdeal didn't seem so mistimed anymore.

LAPT-PERU-7S-4170.jpg

Guilerme Moura

As the Brazilian waited out his penalty, his fellow countryman Ariel Celestino raised to 25,000 from middle position, earning two callers in Fernando Suaya (button) and Ricardo Lozano (big blind). A J♥9♦6♠ flop saw Celestino continue for 43,000, with only Suaya sticking around. Then came the 8♣ turn, a check from Celestino, and an all-in push from Suaya.

"ArielBahia" thought hard and long as Suaya had him covered, then finally committed his chips, turning over Q♠J♣ as he did. Alas Suaya had K♣J♠, and Celestino stood from the table disappointedly.

Then came the river, bringing with it yet one more little bit of chip-changing chance -- the T♦. A winning straight for Celestino, who exhaled as he retook his seat behind a stack of greater than 500,000, having been reminded again that our control over what happens to us is purely really partial.

LAPT-PERU-7S-4163.jpg

Ariel Celestino

But he knew that. All of us do, if we're willing to take a look at the problem closely.

New Jersey Busts Alleged Mob-Run Gambling Ring

Authorities within the state of latest Jersey said they've busted a lucrative mob-run sports gambling ring.

In total, 11 alleged members and co-workers of the Genovese crime family was charged with “reaping millions in criminal profits” in New Jersey through loansharking, illegal check cashing, gambling and money laundering.

The New Jersey attorney general’s office announced the fees on Tuesday.

“We charge that this crew of the Genovese crime family was as much as some of the Mafia’s old tricks in New Jersey, including loansharking and illegal gambling, to the tune of millions of dollars,” said Acting New Jersey Attorney General John Hoffman.

“History teaches us that so long as demand exists for illegal loans, illicit gambling, drugs, and other black-market goods and services, organized crime goes to show a profit by preying on society. Our message to the Mafia is that so long as they do, we’re going to be here to send them to prison.”

Here’s what the clicking release said concerning the gambling part of the case:

Vincent P. Coppola, 37, of Union, N.J., son of imprisoned Genovese capo Michael Coppola, allegedly was a part of a network of Genovese associates who ran a multi-million dollar illegal sports gambling enterprise in New Jersey that utilized an off-shore “wire room” in Costa Rica to process bets. Coppola allegedly was an “agent” who managed sub-agents or package holders, each of whom had a “package” of bettors under him. He allegedly supervised sub-agents John W. Trainor, 42, of Brick, N.J., and Jerry J. Albanese, 47, of Scotch Plains. Agents decide which bettors can open accounts and gamble using the enterprise’s website and toll-free phone number. In addition they dictate how much a bettor can gamble per game and per week, and monitor the action and balances of the packages they oversee. Eventually, Coppola allegedly gave Trainor and Albanese more complete control of the bettors of their packages. Coppola allegedly had four packages under him, including those of Trainor and Albanese. In one year, in 2011, Coppola’s packages allegedly handled greater than $1.7 million in bets, and Coppola, Trainor, Albanese and the Genovese crime family—through Alberti and Tuzzo—allegedly made greater than $400,000 in profits.

The case comes because the state of recent Jersey is attempting its hardest to debut legal sports gambling its casinos and racetracks. Gov. Chris Christie has said that he thinks by legalizing sports betting he can take it out of the so-called black market.

Online Gambling Receives Big Break Since House Panel Approval

For 5 years now, Rep. Barney Frank and his supporters has been seeking to overturn the UIGEA bill. This bill made it illegal for banks and bank card companies to transfer funds to online gaming companies, therefore making online gambling much more of a risk. Yesterday marked a breakthrough within the online gambling world for US players and the groups seeking to make things happen.

The next journey for Rep. Frank, who have been aggressively working to overturn this law, is to bring the recently approved legislation to the home Democratic Leadership. Throughout the House Financial Services Committee, the legislation was voted 41-22 in support of legalizing online gaming inside the USA. This will likely allow US players to gamble online and operators to provide gambling online without fear of prosecution.

One thing remains certain, any current violators of the UIGEA bill will face major difficulties in acquiring licences, if the facility to procure one at all, to do business here within the US. One of the crucial largest online gaming sites are still accepting US players and ignoring US laws.

If you play on sites akin to PokerStars.com and Fulltiltpoker.com, you'll be twiddling with fire. Although these companies operate outside of the US, by still allowing US players to make use of their sites is not going to only directly affect their business, however the players to boot. On a fair note, a lot of Las Vegas Casinos that experience steered clear, staying in compliance with the united states government, are only sitting, watching, and looking ahead to the instant they are able to break on through to the net world.

Other than the present violators of the bill are major concerns regarding taxing, minors, and addiction. The taxing of online gaming sites may end up in billions over the following 10 years. How can be capable of detect minors gambling online? And more importantly, what state turns into of families if addiction takes hold?

These questions any many more has been raised by Rep. Spencer Bachus of Alabama, stating “It’s incredulous that we'd open up casinos in every home, every bedroom, every dorm room, IPhone, Blackberry, etc.” The reality is, it's already this way, putting this within the hands of a regulation will greatly benefit us all. US based companies may also be regularly monitored and taxed much easier on American soil.

Wednesdays victory still comes with ties. Even if the bill is before the house, it will be be added into another bill to be able to be passed.

NAPT Mohegan Sun: Mercier follows Selbst to seal incredible double defense

napt-thumb.jpgDouble double. Repeat repeat. Double double. Repeat repeat.

If I hadn't seen this with my very own eyes, I MIGHT never have believed it. But after Vanessa Selbst successfully defended her NAPT Mohegan Sun title yesterday, her Team PokerStars Pro colleague Jason Mercier has just defended his High Roller Bounty Shootout title too.

According to mathematicians, that's a 30,000 to 1 shot. Yes, it's rigged. Obviously it's rigged.

However for something stage-managed, this looked remarkably authentic. Mercier came to the general table with essentially the most bounty chips, having eliminated six players from his heat on Tuesday. Today, he won an extra three bounties--including the crucial last one in every of Eugene Katchalov who he defeated heads up--and his winnings totaled $246,600. (See the consequences page for the whole calculations.)

This was Mercier's tenth major tournament victory in a career that continues to be only about three years old. It is, frankly, staggering stuff.

"There is not any real secret to it," Mercier said. "I just attempt to make the appropriate plays and do the most efficient I can."

jason mercier champion2.jpg

Jason Mercier hoists the NAPT Bounty Shootout trophy aloft. Again.

The heats on Tuesday have been quick-fire affairs, with a rapidly escalating structure prompting chips to fly into pots and players out the door. The reward for surviving that carnage, however, was a seat at this final table, where every bounty was now worth $10,000 apiece but picking them up was a lot more difficult.

After five opening levels, all nine players were still within the hunt. Stacks were evenly balanced and it seemed as if it might have gone on all night. Then something suddenly changed.

First, Joe Sweeney shoved his middle pair into Eugene Katchalov's flopped nut flush. Whoops. One down. Then Micah Raskin found tens when Jonathan Jaffe had found queens. Raskin was our second to depart.

The dust had barely settled on those two eliminations once we were taking a look at two more. Scott Blackman (A♦Q♥) came off third best in a three-way all in coup, also featuring Michael Pesek (A♣K♣) and Jimmie Guinther (Q♣9♠).

Blackman busted then and there, out in seventh, and Guinther was also critically injured. He doubled his micro stack against Mercier, but couldn't continue an incredible resurgence. Instead he was all in again very soon after and Pesek this time finished the job. Pesek managed to get pocket twos to carry against Guinther's king high.

At five handed, the action barely slackened. Taylor von Kriegenbergh, who had amassed the loudest rail of supporters, also almost managed to drag off probably the most unlikely outdraw when he took pocket fives up against Eugene Katchalov's aces.

Von Kriegenbergh turned a suite to send his supporters bounding around the tournament floor in delight. However the ace rivered to depart them sprawled at the carpet in despair.

Katchalov allowed himself a wry chuckle and a thumbs as much as family at the rail, while Von Kriegenbergh knew he must get his short stack within the middle in no time. He did, but his K♦J♦ was no match for Pesek's A♦J♣ and out went Von Kriegenbergh, pursued by his cavalry.

taylor von kriegenbergh mohegan sun 2011 BSO Joe Giron JGP7099.jpg

The end of the street for Taylor von Kriegenbergh

At this stage within the proceedings, Mercier was still ahead within the grand bounty race, but only because of his destruction of the table in his heats, where he knocked out six opponents. He had not eliminated anyone from the general and Pesek in particular, who had slain three, was inching closer.

But cometh the challenge cometh the Mercier. The following player to fall, Jonathan Jaffe, was reduce by the Team PokerStars Pro. Jaffe had led the table for long periods today, but if he shoved for slightly greater than 70,000, Mercier had a smidgen more both relating to cards and chips.

Mercier's A♣Q♠ was never behind Jaffe's A♥9♠ and that was the tip of Jaffe's challenge.

jonathan jaffe mohegan sun 2011 BSO Joe Giron JGP7124.jpg

Jonathan Jaffe out in fourth

With seven bounties and only three players left, Mercier was now guaranteed no less than a tie of the $20,000 bounty bonus. The one one that could stop him was Katchalov, who would have to bust Pesek and Mercier to attract level.

But because the newest member of Team PokerStars Pro, Katchalov saw a really perfect opportunity to prove his mettle. Lo and behold, he seized his chance - although he needed a stroke of fine fortune to eliminate Pesek.

Three-handed and folded to Pesek within the small blind, he moved all in for approximately 70,000 and Katchalov, who had found an ace, called the shove. The issue was that Pesek also had an ace, together with a six, which was one pip better than Katchalov's A♥5♥. But it surely wouldn't be a massive final without an outdraw, and the 5♦ appeared at the flop to vault Katchalov into the lead and send Pesek home.

pesek katchalov bso2.jpg

Michael Pesek and Eugene Katchalov

With Pesek's chances within the bounty race thus extinguished, it was Team Pro v Team Pro not just for the title but for that bounty bonus too. They were pretty even in stacks (Mercier had a slight advantage) and the stage was set for a battle that will have gone on for several hours.

heads up mohegan sun 2011 BSO Joe Giron JGP7158.jpg

Eugene Katchalov and Jason Mercier heads up

But there's in a different way to finish heads up battles: Big hand against big hand. That they had played fewer than ten hands when the entire money suddenly flew into the center on a flop of 9♣8♣7♠.

Mercier had 9♠T♦ (ie, top pair, an overcard and a straight draw) while Katchalov had also connected along with his 7♥8♠. If there's something you'll say about Mercier it's that he flips well. And although the 3♠ wasn't an out, the T♥ at the river was.

Katchalov offered his hand, and Mercier shook it warmly. It's hardly a brand new thing for Mercier to stroll off with an enormous title, but he still seems to enjoy it immensely.

"It's definitely not getting old," Mercier said.

katchalov congratulates mercier .jpg

Eugene Katchalov congratulates Jason Mercier

That really is now it from NAPT Mohegan Sun. Vanessa Selbst laid down a gauntlet to Jason Mercier, and Jason Mercier rose to the challenge.

Congratulations to either one of them on a remarkable, ridiculous week.

Look back at the play-by-play of this tournament. And find the entire Bounty Shootout results by clicking the red.

Goodnight.
