As the Shinnecock Tribe awaits word on its application for federal recognition, speculation has already begun on which locations the Indian tribe may decide to establish casinos. Members of the tribe confirmed that historic Belmont Park often is the spot they desire.
Shinnecock representatives was seeking the formal federal acceptance of the tribe since 1978. But last week, an agreement was reached between the tribe and the U.S. Department of the internal to hurry up the review process, and a choice is anticipated by the top of the year.
Meanwhile, foward-looking tribal members are anxious to enjoy their federally guaranteed casino and gaming privileges, and plenty of say Belmont, in Nassau County, will be the ideal location. The track, home to this week's Triple Crown finale, is found just ouside Ny city and could be a very simple trip for City residents.
"The people within the surrounding communities have indicated support," said Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi of the rumored casino. "Belmont is the correct location both for the operators of a casino, the residents and the local governments."
An earlier proposal to bring a Shinnecock casino to their ancestral area on New york met with resistance from Southampton residents, worried about increased traffic of their exclusive neighborhoods.
The tribe says it cares to find in a space where the casino could be welcome. "We fully intend to stay good neighbors as we pursue opportunities to supply jobs for our people," said Shinnecock trustee Gordell Wright.
