Known in the local live tourneys scene as much for his skills at the tables as for his great sense of humour, he had everyone enjoying his company even if he was collecting loads of chips. He bagged 115,800 chips at the end of the night to take an early run €26,702 first prize.

A total of 143 players entered the €700 + €70 buy-in, even, generating a prizepool worth €97,097. Fifteen players will get paid, starting at €1,699.

The three Portuguese Team PokerStars Pros also played yesterday and, after all was said and done, two of them survived and will be back for Day 2 today: Henrique Pinho (22,200 chips) and Nuno Coelho (8,100). João Nunes, who had a great start climbing from 15,000 starting chips to 40,000 in the first three levels, found himself on the wrong side of a cooler in the last level of play when his A♠A♦ failed to improve after a Q♠Q♥6♦ flop where his rival held Q♦J♥ and all the chips went to the middle.
