Sunday Million II: Van Razor swiftly slices up field, earns $177K

Sunday's "Double Vision" promotion meant a second Sunday Million was added this week, meaning players had an extra chance at PokerStars' popular $215 no-limit hold'em tournament with the $1 million guarantee. The Sunday Million II started a half-hour later than the regular Sunday Million, but actually ended a few minutes before its counterpart thanks to a blindingly fast final table that saw Van Razor of Canada plow through a tableful of opponents to capture the title and $177,235.18 first prize.

Van Razor earned the largest share of the tourney's guarantee-busting $1,133,200 prize pool, created by the 5,666 who entered the Sunday Million II. The top 810 finishers made the cash, with it taking almost five hours for that money bubble to burst.

Team PokerStars Pro Leo Margets was among those just missing the money when she was eliminated in 822nd. Meanwhile, Andre "acoimbra" Coimbra of Team Online was more fortunate to last a bit longer to finish 763rd for a $328.62 cash. Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov also got that far and more, lasting all of the way to 411th to take away $430.61, with his teammates Martin "AABenjaminAA" Hruby (317th, $487.27) and Naoya "nkeyno" Kihara (141st, $849.90) likewise making a profit in this one.

It would ultimately take about nine-and-a-half hours for the field to be whittled down to just 18 players gathered around the final two tables, at which point knif1807 and 77kol0bok77 were battling for the chip lead with both hovering around the 6.8 million-chip mark.

Krazy90 (18th), Muntjesvader (17th), and CuAt69UsdSng (16th) were the next to go, each earning $3,342.94 for their efforts. AKLJ90 (15th), Jannick "EDWARDHOPPER" Wrang (14th), and Ravic85 (13th) took away $5,042.74 apiece. And Pinocchyo (12th), CredeExperto (11th), and batcashaut (10th) each saw an additional $6,742.54 in their PokerStars upon their eliminations.

With Van Razor having pushed into the chip lead with more than 9.7 million, and 10/6/13 Sunday Million winner Runninggreat not far behind with almost 8.9 million, the final table was underway.

1dec13-sundaymillionII-finaltable.jpg

Seat 1: PIPI tapis! (Malta) -- 6,864,790
Seat 2: Van Razor (Canada) -- 9,753,776
Seat 3: loupeznik10 (Czech Republic) -- 6,266,469
Seat 4: Mzo. (Sweden) -- 6,356,096
Seat 5: 77kol0bok77 (Russia) -- 6,487,250
Seat 6: knif1807 (Germany) -- 7,315,800
Seat 7: bmky88 (Singapore) -- 1,502,563
Seat 8: _mauser_658 (Lithuania) -- 3,223,094
Seat 9: Runninggreat (Canada) -- 8,890,162

It took a little less than one orbit for the first elimination of the final table to occur.

The blinds were 125,000/250,000 when bmky88 open-pushed for 1,037,563 from middle position and got a single caller in Mzo. in the big blind. bmky88 had [Kc][Qh] and Mzo. [Ad][7s]. The flop came a startling [9d][9h][9s], then the [2d] and [8h] less dramatically followed to send bmky88 out in ninth.

Next to go was _mauser_658 in eighth after losing a preflop all-in confrontation with Runninggreat.

The blinds had hiked up to 150,000/300,000 when _mauser_658 opened with a shove for 1,943,094 from the button and Runninggreat called from the small blind. It was [Jc][Td] for _mauser_658 and [As][7s] for Runninggreat. The board ran out [8c][2h][5c][Kc][8d], and they were down to seven.

Shortly after that the blinds were 200,000/400,000 when Van Razor opened with a raise to 1 million from the button, then loupeznik10 reraised to 3.2 million from the small blind. It folded back to Van Razor who reraised again to 5.4 million, and loupeznik10 called with the 553,581 left behind.

loupeznik10 had [Ad][Qd] and was hoping to improve against the [3d][3s] of Van Razor, but the flop fell [5d][7s][3h] to give the latter a set, and by the [Jh] turn loupeznik was drawing dead to earn a seventh-place finish.

The final six players played another 15 minutes to make it to the 11-hour break with Van Razor having a commanding lead with more than 21 million, nearly three times what anyone else had at that moment. When they returned five minutes later, a blitzkrieg of bustouts rapidly followed, with Van Razor knocking out all five opponents in the next six minutes, needing just a dozen more hands to finish the tournament!

The first three knockouts happened during Level 39, when the blinds were still 200,000/400,000 with a 40,000 ante.

First it was 77kol0bok77 open-pushing from under the gun for 4,373,650 with [7d][7h] and Van Razor calling from the small blind with [As][Kc]. The board came [Ts][4s][6s][9h][7s], adding up to a set of sevens for 77kol0bok77 but a spade flush for Van Razor, thereby ending 77kol0bok77's run in sixth.

Five hands later, Van Razor opened for 980,000 from the small blind and Mzo. called from the big blind. As PIPI tapis! was asking the others about possibly discussing a deal, the flop came [Ac][3h][Jd], Van Razor checked, Mzo. bet 1.2 million, Van Razor raised to 6.8 million, and Mzo. called all in with the 5,511,547 left.

Mzo. showed [Ad][6d] for top pair of aces, but Van Razor had flopped bottom two pair with [Jh][3s]. The turn was the [Tc] and river the [4s], and they were down to four.

Three hands after that it was Runninggreat raising to 1.56 million from the button, then Van Razor reraising to 5.04 million from the big blind and Runningreat calling all in with the 3,144,256 left.

Runninggreat had [As][Tc] but needed help against Van Razor's [Th][Td]. The board came [2d][7h][Kh], then [5s], then [Kc], and Van Razor had claimed another victim to carve the field to three. Still, it was another great finish for Runninggreat who added a fourth to that first-place showing in the Sunday Million two months ago.

Two hands later they had reached Level 40 and the blinds had moved up to 250,000/500,000 when Van Razor raised to 1.1 million from the button, knif1807 reraised all in for 5,527,200 from the small blind, PIPI tapis! folded the big blind, and Van Razor called.

Van Razor was the one behind this time with [Ks][Js] against knif1807's [Ac][6s]. But the [2s][Ts][Kh] flop soon corrected that, giving Van Razor top pair of kings plus a flush draw. The turn was the [9c] and river the [5c], and they were down to two.

Heads-up play would then last but one hand, with Van Razor completing the sequence of busts to claim the title in breathtakingly quick fashion.

The hand began with Van Razor way up to 49,175,210, about six-and-a-half times the 7,484,790 that PIPI tapis! had. The latter opened with a 2x raise to 1 million from the button, then Van Razor reraised to 3.5 million. PIPI tapis! pushed for 7,434,790, and Van Razor called.

Van Razor: [Ad][5d]
PIPI tapis!: [8c][8d]

The flop came [6s][7s][As] and just like that Van Razor was in front yet again, with PIPI tapis! looking for one of the two remaining eights to survive. The turn was the [Jh] and the river the [Ac], improving Van Razor further to trips and bringing an abrupt end to the Sunday Million II.

Congratulations to Van Razor who carried the chip lead to the final table, then following the first two knockouts swiftly wiped out the rest of the table to claim one of two Sunday Million titles being awarded tonight!

ANZPT Canberra Final Table Player Profiles

The PokerStars.net ANZPT Canberra has produced a field of 134 players for the $2,200 Main Event to create a prize pool of $268,000. The nation's capital and the Casino Canberra played host to three days of intense poker action, as our field has been reduced to our final table of nine.

It's a fantastic line up and should produce a thrilling finale. Here's a little more background about our ANZPT Canberra final table participants...

luke_edwards_anzpt_canberra.jpg

Seat 1: Luke Edwards (PokerStars Qualifier) - Barwon Heads, Victoria

Luke Edwards is a 26-year old who works in the IT industry. He has been playing poker for five years after being inspired by none other than the great Tony Hachem. Luke is no stranger to ANZPT final tables after finishing second to Brotha D in last season's ANZPT Darwin event. Luke claims he is a nit who has been running like God, so he'll be looking to bring that form into the final table and rely on his previous experience to go one place better!

george_graziani_anzpt_canberra.jpg

Seat 2: George Graziani - Sydney, New South Wales

George Graziani is a 38-year old motor mechanic from Sydney who describes himself as a "top bloke". We like top blokes so it's great to see this amateur reach his first major poker final table. He has been playing poker for four years after his mates got him into the game. George credits "solid play" as helping his reach this stage of the tournament and he will be keen to go all the way!

toothpick_tony_anzpt_canberra2.jpg

Seat 3: Tony Kambouroglou - Sydney, New South Wales

One of the cult heroes of Australian poker, Tony Kambouroglou is easily identifiable in any poker tournament by his trademark toothpick. A painter by trade, "Toothpick" has been playing poker for five years in both cash games and tournaments. With over US$200,000 in career tournament earnings, Tony has plenty of experience and support at today's final table as he strives to become the first toothpick to win an ANZPT title.

andrew_watson_anzpt_canberra.jpg

Seat 4: Andrew Watson (PokerStars Player) - Wollongong, New South Wales

Another fine product of the 'gong, Andrew Watson is a 24-year old with an impressive online and live poker resume. Andrew is known for his runner-up finish in last season's ANZPT Queenstown event, but he's also one of the country's finest online poker talents. Under the moniker "higher wattage", Watson is currently ranked 3rd online in Australia and will be a real threat here on this final table.

james_broom_anzpt_canberra.jpg

Seat 5: James Broom - Melbourne, Victoria

One of the most dangerously talented players in the country, James Broom is known for playing any two cards, anywhere, anytime. The 2008 Melbourne Championships Main Event winner has one previous ANZPT final table to his credit, a ninth place at the inaugural event in Adelaide back in 2009. Interestingly, this is the first tournament cash for Broom since that result, so he'll be keen to make this a big one. He has also final tabled the PokerStars Sunday Million and Warmup amongst an impressive online resume.

khiem_nguyen_anzpt_canberra.jpg

Seat 6: Khiem Nguyen - Wiesbaden, Germany

Khiem Nguyen is the only International player on this final table. Originally from Germany, Khiem is currently based out of Brisbane as he travels around the world on a backpacking-poker adventure. Khiem has been playing for five years and has built up a very impressive poker resume that includes a 2010 EPT Germany side event trophy, a third place in the 2010 Master Classic of Poker in Amsterdam worth over €140,000 as well as a third place in the Macau Millions this April for HK$200,000. Khiem was the chip lead entering the final day of play and will be hard to stop!

xiuming_huang_anzpt_canberra2.jpg

Seat 7: Xiuming "Sammy" Huang (PokerStars Qualifier) - Bonner, Australian Capital Territory

Sammy Huang is the lone local on this final table after being introduced to the game six years ago by his friends. Sammy enjoys both No Limit Holdem and Pot Limit Omaha and has several tournament results to his credit including runner-up in the 2009 Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon for HK$268,465 in prize money. Sammy was inspired by the greats of the game in Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson and will be looking to replicate their greatness with victory here this afternoon.

tristan_bain_anzpt_canberra.jpg

Seat 8: Tristan Bain - Melbourne, Victoria

Tristan Bain is another of the talented, young guns at this final table. At 25-years of age, Tristan has been playing poker for four years after previously working as a dealer at Crown Casino. Interestingly, he is coached by none other than James Broom. That explains his aggressive style which was highlighted by his shove with six-eight offsuit to burst the bubble late last night. Away from poker Tristan enjoys AFL and golf, and he has ambitions to one day play high stakes poker all around the world.

leigh_warne_anzpt_canberra.jpg

Seat 9: Leigh Warne - Melbourne, Victoria

Leigh Warne is a 33-year old salesman from Melbourne who is another from the James Broom brood. The good mates have been playing together for several years, with Warne normally found in the cash games up to $5/10NL. Warne did final table the Melbourne Championships final table back in 2006, but he'll be looking to go a little further than his sixth place finish on that occasion.

Americas Cup returns to PokerStars

acop-thumb.jpgThe great American songwriter Randy Newman once joked, "South America stole our name!"

While Newman was commenting on the jingoistic atmosphere of the times, he might well have been predicting the advent of the PokerStars Americas Cup of Poker (well, maybe not, not, but it's close!). In any case, the Americas Cup is back, and it will pit countries from around the Americas (yes, all of them) against each other for the title.

From March 15-April 14 players from the USA, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil and Argentina will be battling for spots on their country's team. There will also be a tenth team made up of the remaining Latin American counties.

In all, the players from the ten teams will compete in a series of points tournaments. The four players who accumulate the most points will represent their country at the live final--if their team makes it there.

When all the matches are complete, the six countries with the most wins will automatically qualify for the live final. The remaining four teams will then play off for the final two positions.

Then in May, the eight teams will travel to Iguazu Falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina. There they will compete for a share of $150,000 and the Americas Cup title.

Even if you don't want to spend the pennies it costs to get involved, tickets to the $0.11 tournaments are available in free SNGS that are running all the time in the Tourney-Regional section of the PokerStars lobby.

For a full schedule and more information, visit the PokerStars Americas Cup of Poker homepage.

Good luck!

Steady ROHR comes from behind for Sunday Warm-Up Victory!

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for sunday-warmup-promo1.jpgIt was a huge weekend in PokerStars-land, with the EPT Deauville reaching a final table just hours before the Sunday Majors kicked into high gear, with both the Warm-Up and Sunday Million blowing through their guarantees with ease yet again. After better than ten hours of high-octane tournament poker ROHR came from behind to claim the victory and $119,548.05 payday. His final payout was the result of a three-way deal and the extra $10,000 he won as a result.

It took nine hours to get there, but only a few minutes to play out hand-for-hand play as derek8 busted in 10th place to set up the final table. Gretko came into the final table as the chip leader, with the stacks looking like this as the final nine settled in to duke it out for the big money.

gretko (LA) - $11,052,372
ROHR (Wurzburg) - $8,641,187
Chaesi (Aetingen) - $7,155,428
donnylon346 (skivarp) - $6,298,870
delegator (Bergen) - $5,435,468
risiko13 (Basel) - $3,741,696
toetagU (WWI) - $2,532,407
Joe Hahn (Doorwerth) - $2,053,096
Negriin (Punta Alta) - $1,269,476

warmup 1.24.jpg

It only took a few hands into the final table for the first big confrontation to take place. Action started off reasonably, with a preflop raise from Chaesi and a call from ROHR, but the fireworks kicked off when the flop came down [Qs]-[9s]-[Ah]. Chaesi led out with a bet, and ROHR flat-called to bring the [Jd] on the turn. Chaesi quickly moved all in with [Ad]-[Js] for two pair, and ROHR made the easy call with [As]-[Qh] for the bigger two pair. Only a jack on the river would save Chaesi, but it was not to be when the [Ac] rolled off to send him packing in 9th place ($7,708.80).

Joe Hahn came into the final table one of the shortest stacks, and when action folded around to his small blind, [Qd]-[6c] looked good enough to shove with, so that's exactly what he did. ToetagU thought for a moment before calling, but tabled the dominating [Ah]-[6d] to put Joe in a world of hurt. Life got no better for Joe Hahn as the board ran out [Ac]-[8s]-[Ks]-[Qh]-[Kh] to bust him in 8th place ($12,045).

Negriin played the short-stack ninja role well, ducking and weaving his tiny stack to a 7th-place finish and a $21,681 payday. His run came to an end at the hands of the deep-stacked gretko, who moved all in over the top of Negriin's preflop raise. The pot-committed Negriin called with [Ac]-[3d], only to find himself crushed by gretko's [Ad]-[4h]. The flop of [4s]-[9c]-[7c] left Negriin looking for running clubs to stay alive, and for a moment it looked like the poker gods would obey when they dropped the [Tc] on the turn. But the river was a less-than-helpful [6h], and Negriin was headed to the virtual rail.

Gretko claimed another victim and the chip lead when he busted toetagU in 6th place ($31,317). All the money went in preflop when toetagU defended his small blind against gretko's button raise by moving all in over the top with [Ah]-[2d]. Unfortunately for toetagU, gretko wasn't on a bluff, but had pocket queens. Gretko made the obvious call, but the [4d]-[2h]-[4s] flop gave toetagU a couple more outs. The [Td] on the turn wasn't one of them, and neither was the [5s] that hit the river as gretko's queens held up, and then there were five.

They say that fortune favors the bold, and it's certainly easier to be bold if you've got a big chip lead. That's what the world looked like when gretko open-raised from the small blind with [Kc]-[3s], then called delegator's all-in move. Delegator showed [Ah]-[Kh], and looked to be in good shape to double through the chip lead on the [Jc]-[8s]-[Tc] flop, but disaster in the form of the [3h] came on the turn. The [7d] on the river was no help, and delegator was relegated to a 5th-place finish, good for $40,953.

Donnylon346 made it all the way to 4th place mostly by staying out of the way, but eventually he too, succumbed to the gretko steamroller. Gretko opened with a raise from the button, and donnylon moved all in over the top with [Ac]-[5h]. Gretko made the call with [Ah]-[8c], and was significantly ahead of his opponent. The flop was no big help to either player, coming down [4s]-[Jc]-[7c], and the [Qd] on the turn was equally meaningless. The [Qh] on the river brought no reprieve for donnylon, and he was done in 4th place ($54,443.40).

With donnylon's elimination, the three remaining players took a moment to discuss a chop, and after some brief discussion, they agreed on a chip count chop that locked up $128,188.59 for gretko, $109,548.05 for ROHR and $94,758.03 for risiko13. With $10,000 left on the table for the eventual winner, the three survivors retook their seats and the tournament was re-started.

All the money went in on a coin flip on the very first hand back, as gretko opened from the button with [Ah]-[Jh], and risiko13 moved all in over the top with [6h]-[6c]. The flop swung the pendulum firmly to gretko's side when it came down [Tc]-[Ad]-[Qh], and risiko was in deep trouble. The [5s] on the turn was no help for anyone, and when the river brought the [9h], risiko was done in 3rd place and heads up poker ensued.

For all the fevered pace of the rest of the final table, the heads up match between ROHR and gretko was a study in patience. Gretko took a big lead into heads up play, and quickly established a 2:1 chip advantage, but was unable to advance his cause for the longest time as ROHR proved adept at picking his spots and timing his moves.

And finally, after a lengthy heads-up duel, ROHR's patience was rewarded. He took a dominant chip lead when his pocket eights held up against gretko's flush draw in the next-to-last hand of the tournament, and then this all happened. With a massive chip lead, ROHR opened for a raise from the button with [3c]-[3h]. Gretko called for the last of his chips with [Jd]-[4c]. The flop of [Qd]-[7s]-[6h] was no help to either player, but gretko picked up an inside straight draw with the [5c] turn. No two-outer for greto, though, as the [Ad] on the river sent him packing in 2nd place, but with $128,188.59 for his troubles.

ROHR proved that good things come to those who wait, and his slow-but-steady approach to the heads up match garnered him a Sunday Warm-Up title and $119,548.05 for a good day's work. Congratulations to ROHR and all our final table players on a job well done!
