Problem Gambling Grouped by Experts with Substance Abuse

Studies have led experts to understand problem gambling isn't as a result of gaming proliferation, but by a brain imbalance also present in substance abusers.

As due to the numerous studies over the past decade, problem gambling is being linked increasingly more under the bigger umbrella of substance abuse. This week, experts at the recognition and treatment of compulsive gambling will meet in conjunction with drug and alcohol abuse counselors to speak about solutions on the Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse.

Theories that problem gambling is due to exposure to a gaming market that may be constantly expanding have largely been debunked by scientific studies. Instead, evidence has consistently arisen that indicates gambling compulsions derive from an analogous brain chemistry as substance addiction.

Persons affected by problem gambling were found to have significant differences in dopamine production from the common person. The dopamine receptors also are found to be central in alcoholics and drug addicts.

Dopamine levels are believed to assist control and modify risk/reward impulses.

The studies are revelatory to professionals seeking to combat compulsive gambling. Instead of campaigning for gambling bans and fighting casino proliferation, treatment is shifting to addressing a broader issue of addictive behavior.

As additional info becomes available on what causes such self-destructive behavior, counselors and other experts continue to transport toward treating specific symptoms equivalent to problem gambling with a broader program designed to manage addictive impulses in general.
